Removal to Rwanda

Illegal migrants in the UK will this week be notified of their relocation to Rwanda where their claims for asylum will be considered. The UK and Rwanda announced a new Migration and Economic Development Partnership on Thursday 14 April. Rwanda is a signatory to the Refugee Convention, relevant regional conventions including with the Africa Union (AU) conventions

The partnership between the UK and Rwanda aims to target illegal migrants crossing into the UK and hopes to stop the smuggling of people into the country. This agreement fully complies with all national and international law, including the UN Refugee Convention and European Convention on Human Rights.

Migrants entering the UK illegally as of 1 January 2022, by dangerous or unnecessary methods from safe countries, including those arriving by small boats, lorries and found in the UK without leave will be considered for relocation to Rwanda.

Those removed to Rwanda will be provided with support in order to help their relocation, including education, healthcare, training, employment and accommodation as well as "generous support packages". The UK taxpayers are funding the processing costs for each person relocated, funding is only provided while a person remains in Rwanda.
