Joining your partner in the UK.

This route is for those seeking to enter the UK on the basis of their family life with a person who is a British Citizen, is settled in the UK, or is in the UK with limited leave as a refugee or person granted humanitarian protection.

What is a "partner"?

This can either be:

- your spouse

- your civil partner

- your fiance or proposed civil partner

- a partner you have been living with for 2 years akin to marriage

Do i need to prove knowledge of the English language?

You may need to prove your knowledge of the English language when you apply. You can prove it with an academic qualification, or by taking a test.

There are exemptions to meeting this requirement.

What is a financial requirement?

You need to show that you and your partner meet the minimum income requirement (£18,600 per annum) if you want to settle in the UK as a partner. This can be evidenced through either Employment or Self Employment, as well as other sources.

What happens after my visa has been granted?

Your visa will be granted for 2.5 years (5 year route) and will lead towards Indefinite Leave to Remain.

6 months if you’re applying as a fiancé, fiancée or proposed civil partner. This allows for you to marry in the UK and switch in country to the 5 year route after.
